Fulfill State-mandated Educational Requirement Through TEXPERS Courses

TEXPERS is holding Basic and Advanced training on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at the Austin Marriott Downtown, 304 E. Cesar Chavez St.

As a public employee pension fund trustee, you understand the importance of staying up-to-date on best practices and regulations. That's why you should consider attending professional training classes hosted by your membership organization.

Here are five reasons why:

  1. Basic Trustee Training: At TEXPERS, we make it easy for our System Members who are newly elected to their boards to earn state-mandated training. TEXPERS' Basic Trustee Training covers essential topics such as fiduciary matters, governance, ethics, investments, actuarial matters, benefits administration, and risk management. The classes meet the requirements of the Texas Pension Review Board, the state agency mandated to oversee all Texas state and local government retirement systems regarding their actuarial soundness. The agency requires new trustees and administrators to undergo seven hours of training in their first year. A public pension fund trustee and administrator can get the seven hours of training they need in one day by attending TEXPERS' Basic Trustee Training on April 1.
  2. Advanced Trustee Training: For those who want to take their education to the next level, TEXPERS offers Advanced Trustee Training to address more complex topics such as alternative investments, private equity investing, and hedge funds. With this coursework, trustees can better understand the industry and become better prepared to make sound investment decisions. Advanced Trustee Training is for more seasoned trustees who have taken Basic Trustee Training or another training program covering the same content. Advanced Trustee Training differs every time it is held and offers a deep dive into various topics. The training also meets the Texas Pension Review Board's training requirements. Pension fund trustees and administrators must receive at least four hours of training every two years after their first year of service.
  3. State-mandated Training: Texas requires public employee pension fund trustees and administrators to complete certain types of training courses to maintain their board seats. TEXPERS can provide members with the necessary education and certification, helping trustees comply with state regulations. 4. Professional Development: Attending training classes hosted by your membership association is also an excellent way for trustees and administrators to further develop their skills and knowledge and network with other professionals in the field. These courses are typically designed to help trustees stay up-to-date on best practices, trends, and legal changes that could impact their duties. This training takes place the day before the Association's Annual Conference, April 2-5, which is jam-packed with sessions and networking events. Learn more about the conference here.
  5. Membership Support: You are part of a statewide collective. TEXPERS has 68 pension systems as members. Registering for professional training classes hosted by your membership association is an ideal way to show your support for TEXPERS' mission and goals while expanding your knowledge base. This type of ongoing education is especially critical for trustees, who are responsible for safeguarding the funds of their annuitants. Participating in TEXPERS classes gives you a clear understanding of the latest developments that can affect your fiduciary duties and ensure the long-term success of your fund. Your commitment to training demonstrates to stakeholders that pension system trustees and administrators take their duties seriously.

As a public employee pension fund board trustee or administrator, staying informed about best practices to properly manage and protect the funds under your watch is essential. Staying compliant with state laws requires trustees to participate in professional training classes hosted by their professional membership association.
